| The Handplane Book | | In this book, professional furniture maker Garrett Hack helps woodworkers reclaim their woodworking heritage by presenting a treasure trove of information about
handplanes. The Handplane Book
by Garrett Hack
More than any other tool, the handplane has come to symbolize fine
craftsmanship. Handplanes evoke the romance of an earlier era when
planes performed countless woodworking tasks from preparing stock to
shaping moldings. Planes from that time and into the early 20th
century were often exquisitely made and speak eloquently of the
respect and love craftsmen had for their tools. As much as woodworkers
enjoy looking at these beautiful planes, many of them don't know how
to use them to their best advantage. In an era when machines make
quick work of dimensioning stock, cutting joints, and shaping
surfaces, woodworkers have forgotten how efficiently and quickly
planes can perform these same tasks. Many have simply never learned
the skills involved in using planes.
In this book, professional furniture maker Garrett Hack helps
woodworkers reclaim their woodworking heritage by presenting a
treasure trove of information about handplanes. Everything is covered
here: history, theory, and practice. The practical side includes
discussion of everything from tuning and adjusting planes to planning
technique. The historical information traces the lineage of the plane
from Roman times to the present, with special emphasis on the golden
age of planes (19th and early 20th centuries). Also covered are the
many specialty planes used in ancillary woodworking professions. The
concluding chapters take a look at contemporary plane makers and
explain what to look for when buying a plane for the shop or as an
investment. This is a beautiful book to stir the soul of any
woodworker and a mine of information for the tool collector.
'' a definitive volume that describes not only the practical
workings of the various types of planes and how they are used, but
includes details of the tool's history, care, tuning, repair, and even
how to recognize and buy antique planes.'' -- Woodshop News, Dec.'97
(circ. 91,000)
'' a big, lovely book that manages to be both entertaining and
useful and fills a considerable hole in the woodworker's library. . .
. a very handsome production. . . . The most useful section of the
book [is] a long discussion of tuning a plane. There is no greater
pleasure in woodworking than using a finely tuned smooth plane, and no
greater frustration than using a poorly tuned one.'' -- Arizona
Republic, Oct.'97
'' Hand plane collectors should welcome this book. . . . The
pictures are superb, and the advice sound -- makes you want to go curl
some shavings.'' -- Maine Antiques Digest, Nov.'97

job—including softwoods, hardwoods, veneers and man-made boards. An
invaluable reference for every woodworker.
Good Wood Handbook contains:
- 74 individually photographed hardwoods and softwoods, with
easy-to-reference chart information on characteristics, common
uses and workability
- an introduction to wood and wood production, with advice on
logging, milling and seasoning
- tips and techniques on steam bending, laminating and veneering
- a guide to selecting and using man-made boards and decorative
veneers
- up-to-date information on conservation, with key symbols
highlighting endangered species
Introduction
Even the most experienced woodworker would find it difficult to
identify every species of timber; for the rest of us, recognizing
more than commonly used woods can be fraught with confusion. In
any case, choosing wood for a project requires far more than just
appreciating its color, figure, grain and texture. A knowledge of
the wood's working characteristics and common uses--for instance,
whether it will be strong enough for the job or how it takes a
finish--can help prevent problems and make the work more
pleasurable. In addition man-made board and veneers can be used,
either in place of solid wood or for their own properties and
effects.
It is also important that any new wood comes from a
well-managed source, and we should all be aware of which species
are at risk; this way, informed choices can be made and steps
taken to ensure continued supplies of this beautiful material.
